Two men from Brent took part in a high-speed car police chase in a rural village which ended with shots being fired at an unarmed officer, a court heard.

David Rhoden, 28, from Neasden, allegedly pulled the trigger on Pc Chris Kouwenberg during the pursuit which started in Bricket Wood, Hertfordshire, on November 16 last year.

Clayton McKenzie, 36, from Harlesden, is accused of being behind the wheel during the chase which ended in Edgware.

St Albans Crown Court heard the pair are also suspected of being involved in the kidnapping of Adriatik Berisha.

The Kosovian had been snatched and bundled in a car before being released the next day.

He claims he has no idea why he was targeted.

Jurors were told the chase started after a Peugeot 307 the pair are claimed to have been travelling in failed to stop after it was flagged down for not having an MOT certificate.

Speeds of up to 100 miles an hour were clocked during the chase which ended when both driver and passenger fled on foot.

PC Kouwenberg said he chased the front seat passenger who had left the Peugeot while his colleague went after the man who had been driving.

He told the court he chased the suspect through a garden.

“I noticed as he was running he was carrying something in each hand. At first glance it looked like a handgun in each hand’” he said.

“I’ve served in the army - I recognised what they were. He was running with them by his side.

“I shouted police almost at the start of the foot chase and think I shouted ‘Stop! Police! Stop or you’ll be batoned’.”

A recording of the officer’s radio message to the police control centre was played to the jury in which he could he heard saying “Shots fired, shots fired, shots fired. This man is firing indiscriminately.”

Both suspects managed to get away.

Police found two guns and 124 grams of cocaine with a high purity value of 63 per cent while searching the area where the Peugeot was abandoned.

The class A drugs have a street value of £20,000.

A police investigation lead to the arrest of Rhoden and McKenzie.

Both plead not guilty to kidnap, carrying a firearm with criminal intent, possessing a Class a drug with intent, possessing a firearm at the time of committing an offence and assaulting Mr Berisha occasioning him actual bodily harm.

Rhoden also denies attempting to murder PC Kouwenberg, making use of a firearm with intent to resist arrest and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

The trial continues.
