A man is fighting for his life after being shot multiple times in Stonebridge last night – before another man was stabbed in Neasden.

The victim of the shooting, believed to be in his 20s, was found in Lawrence Avenue, at about 8.30pm.

Scotland Yard said he is in a critical condition. No arrests have been made and the weapon has not been recovered.

Stonebridge Police have now been given additional stop and search powers until midday to “robustly police the ward and reassure the community”.

Det Sgt Lee Janes, of the Met’s gang unit Trident, said: “I want to assure the community that we are doing everything we can to catch those responsible.

“At this early stage we believe multiple suspects were involved and are retaining an open mind as to any motive.

“I know there were many witnesses at the scene and I would urge anyone, who hasn’t come forward already, to get in touch.”

Later on a 26-year-old man was stabbed just over a mile away in Rainborough Close, Neasden. Police and medics were called to the scene at 10.20pm and the victim was taken to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Neasden resident Yama Amini, 29, told the Times this morning: “I don’t know if this is related but I saw a gang of four or five muggers chasing two other guys last night and heard them arguing and fighting.”

He added that the crime was a shock since the area had been quite safe for the past couple of years. Neighbours the next day were surprised to hear there had been a stabbing, despite the presence of police officers and tape.

By way of explanation one said: “We just keep ourselves to ourselves round here.

“Everyone is about but no one really knows anyone.”

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call Trident officers by calling 101 and quoting CAD 7921 of May 31. To remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
