Son thanks the community in Kingsbury for tackling smash-and-grab robbers who targeted his dad’s jewellers shop

Mohammed Madhi Said, 20, was in The Jeweller in Kingsbury Road, with his father Sami Said and a colleague, when thieves raided it yesterday at 2pm.

He said: “In 90 seconds they took everything, 90 seconds, they pretty much took everything.

“I was talking to a friend of mine when suddenly four bikes came up here. They get off and started using their force to smash the door. They smashed both doors and got in and as soon as they did one of the guys with a hammer attacked us, I couldn’t see what was in his other hand, it could have been a knife or a gun.

“Another guy took a swing at us, there were maybe six people and they were all holding something, hammers, and knives.

“My father was holding a baseball bat; he protected me before we were able to get into a back room through a safe door.”

Video footage shows angry traders tried to stop the thieves by throwing items as they rode away.

The crowd can be seen dragging a man of a moped and holding him down with a wooden pallet before he is arrested by the police.

According to Mr Said a friend of the family who was standing outside with two knives was in the crowd that attacked the thieves.

He added: “As soon as he did, everyone from the community jumped in to help out. There was a guy in Sim Sim Café who ran up to the guy with the motorbike and kicked him, then our friend fell on him. They all held him down until the police came and arrested him.

“It was great, it was amazing, it felt very good when they caught him.

“The robbery was bad, I was as scared as hell, but it was so nice everyone here who tried to help out.

“People even gathered gold left on the street and gave it back to us. We hope to get the shop up and running again soon.”

The 24-year-old man is currently in police custody.

Officers from the Met’s Flying Squad are appealing for witnesses and anyone with compelling mobiles phone footage to come forward.
