Police worker accused of leaking report on Harlesden murder to the prime suspect

Ebenezer Awotwi, 46, allegedly passed information about a Met probe into the death of Jaypee Maderazo to David Van Der Riet.

South African-born Van Der Riet, 36, had attacked Mr Maderazo following a dispute over a woman and a £1,500 drug debt.

He knocked Mr Maderazo out with a single blow before bundling his victim into the boot of his car and dumping him in Cecil Street, on August 13, 2010.

The 29-year-old Filipino, who was a crystal meth addict, was found lying in the street in a coma and died four days later from serious head injuries.

He was only identified after police released photographs of his distinctive tattoos.

Van Der Riet was subsequently found guilty of manslaughter and jailed for six years at the Old Bailey in July 2011.

Awotwi is also said to have ‘abused public trust in him’ by accessing crime reports about an ongoing probe into the supply of crystal meth.

He appeared at Southwark Crown Court for a brief hearing during which he spoke only to confirm his identity and deny misconduct in a public office between January 23, 2010, and January 4 last year.

Prosecutor Andrew Evans said: “This defendant, a former civilian employee with the Metropolitan Police, in the course of his duties is alleged to have accessed without authority CRIS reports relating to an ongoing investigation into the supply of methylamphetamine.’

Of the murder investigation report, Mr Evans added: “A copy of that was supplied to the suspect who was subsequently found guilty of manslaughter.”

Awotwi from Stanmore, has been remanded on unconditional bail and is due to stand trial on November 11 this year.
