The front police counter in Kilburn is being axed by the Mayor’s office leaving only one face-to-face counter in Wembley to serve the whole borough.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, confirmed plans to reduce the number of police front counters in London on Wednesday to save £8 million.

Front counters, which are normally used for reporting crimes, will now only be available in Wembley as the Kilburn counter was judged to be “poorly used”.

Cllr Zaffar Van Kalwala, Labour representative for Stonebridge, said: “I’m very concerned and disappointed that Brent will only have one 24-hour police station. Keeping residents safe should be one of our main priorities, especially in the wake of recent horrific gang and knife attacks. But clearly this is becoming increasingly difficult because of central government budget cuts.

“Brent’s safety will be seriously put at risk with more police funding cuts.

“We need to ensure we continue to cut crime and protect our borough.”

Also going in Brent are eight safer neighbourhood bases in Walm Lane, Willesden. Kingsbury Trading Estate Unit in Church Lane, Kenton, Station Road, Wembley, Vale Farm Sports Centre tennis pavilion, Watford Road, and King Edward Court, in Elm Road, Wembley, Wembley Designer Outlet and Wembley Feeding Centre in Carey Way.

Harlesden police station in Craven Park is to be “disposed of or exited”.

However, Chalkhill Police Office building will be kept for a future Dedicated Ward Officer Hub, as will Strata House, in Waterloo Road, Dollis Hill, and Mount Pleasant in Alperton.

Sadiq Khan said keeping Londoners safe was his “number-one priority”. He added: “The drastic nature of Government cuts to policing budgets has left us with no choice but to take drastic action and make some very difficult decisions.

He added “The fact is that as a result of government cuts, police officer numbers are falling, and every pound spent keeping a police station open is a pound that would otherwise need to be found by cutting police officer numbers even further.

“That is why, at a time of crime rising nationally and the terrorism threat we face, I continue to call on ministers to urgently end the police funding crisis.”

A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that Kilburn Police Station and it’s front counter has been open and continues to be open until December. It’s address is Kilburn Police Station, Salusbury Road, NW6.

“Although Kilburn Police Station’s front counter will close in December the building will be kept for operational use.

“Wembley Police Station will remain in Brent as the 24/7 front counter for the borough.”
