A lorry driver from Willesden has appeared in court today accused of causing the death of a cyclist at one of London’s deadliest junctions.

Vincent Doyle, 44, of Astley Avenue, allegedly killed German postgraduate student Janina Gehlau at Ludgate Circus last year.

The skip loader driven by Doyle collided with the 26-year-old as he turned left at the junction with Farringdon Street on October 17.

She died three days later.

Doyle appeared at City of London magistrates’ court charged with causing her death by careless driving.

He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth during the brief hearing.

Prosecutor Kate Shilton said: “Mr Doyle, was driving his lorry south down Farringdon Street and collided with Ms Gehlau, a resident of Germany, who was visiting the UK.

“She was on a pedal cycle at the near side of the lorry.

“Mr Doyle turned left activating an automatic speaker system which said “this vehicle is turning left”.

“Ms Gehlau was also travelling south and wanted to go straight on in the cycle lane south along Farringdon Street.

“She was riding her bike along the cycle lane when the lorry collided with Ms Gehlau.”

Magistrates sent the case to the Old Bailey where Doyle will appear on July 27 for a plea and case management hearing.

Doyle indicated he would plead not guilty to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Relatives said Ms Gehlau had bought a second-hand bike to visit galleries and museums because she could not afford public transport.

She was on a three-month unpaid work placement at the Warburg Institute and died a month after arriving in the capital.

Doyle is yet to enter a plea to a single charge of causing death by careless driving.

He was granted unconditional bail.
