A lorry driver from Willesden accused of causing the death of a cyclist at one of London’s deadliest junctions appeared at the Old Bailey today.

Vincent Doyle, 44, of Astley Avenue, allegedly killed German postgraduate student Janina Gehlau at Ludgate Circus last year.

The skip loader driven by Doyle collided with the 26-year-old as he turned left at the junction with Farringdon Street on October 17.

She died three days later with her family by her bedside in the Royal London hospital.

Doyle appeared in court charged with causing her death by careless driving.

He spoke only to confirm his name during the brief hearing.

Judge Charles Wide QV fixed Doyle’s plea and case management hearing for September 21 and set his trial date for October 26.

Gehlau’s parents flew from Dusseldorf for the hearing and are expected to attend the trial.

Mr Doyle was driving his lorry south down Farringdon Street and collided with Ms Gehlau at around 11.30am.

Ms Gelhau was cycling at the near side of the lorry when Doyle turned left activating an automatic speaker system which said ‘this vehicle is turning left’.

The student was riding her bike along the cycle lane when the lorry collided with Ms Gehlau, and later died of the injuries sustained during the collision.

Relatives said Ms Gehlau had bought a second-hand bike to visit galleries and museums because she could not afford public transport.

She was on a three-month unpaid work placement at the Warburg Institute and died a month after arriving in the capital.

Doyle is yet to enter a plea to a single charge of causing death by careless driving.

He was granted unconditional bail.
