A Willesden man who fled court before being he could be sentenced for burglary has been caught and sent to prison following an appeal by the Times.

Martin Brophy, of Colin Road, was waiting in the communal area at Harrow Crown Court when he made off on June 18.

The 36-year-old was sentenced to 21 months for the break-in committed in October last year.

Yesterday a member of the public recognised him sleeping rough in a car in Oman Road, Kilburn, and he was arrested and brought to court today.

He is now serving his 21-month jail sentence.

Detective Constable Nick Lee said: “Martin Brophy, a prolific thief, thought he could avoid a prison sentence by running away from court. “

It is hoped that Mr Brophy will learn from his actions and start the rehabilitation process he needs to turn him around and move away from crime.”
