A teenage terror suspect from Willesden accused of travelling to Syria to join forces with the Islamic State appeared at the Old Bailey today.

Yahya Rashid, 19, was arrested on March 31 as he landed on UK soil at Luton Airport on a flight from Istanbul.

The Middlesex University electronics student was allegedly returning from Syria after hatching a plan with three other men and a woman to travel to the war-torn country.

The party travelled to Marrakesh and then onwards to Turkey before crossing the border with Syria, it is said.

Rashid, who appeared by videolink from Belmarsh prison wearing a maroon prison-issue tracksuit, spoke only to confirm his name during the brief hearing.

Mr Justice Saunders remanded him in custody ahead of a plea and case management hearing on August 7 and set a provisional trial date for September 7.

Rashid is yet to enter pleas to a charge of preparing to commit an act of terrorism between November 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015, and a charge of assisting others to commits acts of terrorism over the same period.
