Suspected conmen is going door to door trying to scam residents out of their gold, a councillor has warned.

Residents are being urged to be weary of a man going door to door leafleting and returning a few hours later with an apparently generous offer to buy residents’ gold – but the prices are actually far below market value.

The warning comes after a number of tenants on the Alexandra and Ainsworth estate, in Kilburn, complained that they have been conned into handing over their valuables.

Cllr Mike Katz (Lab: Kilburn) said: “Whenever you hear stories like this it’s just a reminder to be as careful as possible. Always ask for a person’s credentials before you let them in or talk with them.

“If it sounds to good to be true, unfortunately, it probably is. If you are in doubt call the local neighbourhood police team.”

If you suspect you have been the victim of a scam call Camden Police on 0300 123 1212.
