Sally Buchanan creats artwork to celebrate borough’s status
The old adage that one person’s trash is another’s treasure has never been more fitting as Brent was unveiled as a Fairtrade borough.
The council commissioned Sally Buchanan to create an artwork to celebrate the status and the Cricklewood-based artist used more than 1,000 bottle tops to mark the occasion.
Ms Buchanan used the bottle tops to create a large Fairtrade logo which now takes pride of place in Hazel Road open space in Kensal Green after the official opening last Friday (5).
Brent won recognition as a Fairtrade borough earlier this year after eight years of campaigning. Fairtrade helps producers in developing nations by giving them better access to export markets, agreeing fair minimum prices and insisting on good conditions for workers.
Robin Sharp, chairman of Brent Fairtrade Network, said: “Sally’s art installation is a striking visual statement of Brent’s support for Fairtrade and its status as a Fairtrade borough.”
