A council chief launched a blitz on flytipping in the borough by rolling up his sleeves and helping to clean up a notorious dumping hotspot today.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, visited Lyon Park Avenue in Wembley, which has become a magnet for unwanted items such as sofas, mattresses and black bags of waste.

He joined street cleaning crews to clean up the road which has been identified by the council as one of 147 flytipping hotspots for its new campaign which started on Monday.

Cllr Butt said: “Stopping flytipping is a major priority for me and for the council. I know our residents hate to see litter on the streets and flytipped areas so we’re blitzing the worst areas in the borough to make sure they are kept tidy and litter free.

“We’re focusing on the worst areas to keep on top of the problem and make sure Brent residents get the cleaner streets they deserve.”

Street cleansing will place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in town centres and residential streets and all 21 wards have been allocated a dedicated street sweeper who is cleaning up the dirtiest spots in their area.
