Conor Washington has admitted he had doubts in his mind whether he would make the step up to the Championship, but says he is now comfortable playing at this level.

The 24-year-old, who joined the club from Peterborough last January for £3million, notched his first-ever league goal for the club as they grabbed a welcome 2-1 victory at local rivals Fulham on Saturday.

And Washington, who has impressed in recent weeks, says he now has the belief to push on and produce his best football for QPR.

He told the Times: “For me I’m a massive confidence player, it’s been the same throughout my career to date. As soon as I get the confidence and the team are doing well I really start to flourish and you see the best of me.

“I’ve obviously had a really slow start to my career at QPR, but it’s happened at every club I’ve been at.

“Coming from non-league you have that doubt in your mind whether you’re good enough or not, so you’ve got to go out there and prove it to yourself and others that you are.

“Obviously it’s taken a little longer than I would have liked to have hit the ground running, but I feel comfortable at this level now.”

Washington’s goal at Fulham was a tad fortutious, taking a deflection on its way to the goal, but the striker says it is pleasing he’s now starting to get some luck, after a lack of it towards the end of last season domestically.

He added: “It was really strange towards the end of last season not playing for my club, but playing for my country.

“I had a really good start to my international career with Northern Ireland and that gave me confidence.

“I hadn’t had much of that at QPR but I feel I’ve got a bit of that now and some luck too, so hopefully I can push on now and so can the team.”

He continued: “It’s a strange league this one.

“If we can string a couple of wins together on the bounce we’ll be in the play-off positions, so it’s up to us to try and do that now.

“There’s no doubt we needed this win and thankfully got it in the end.”
