Harrow businessman, who also sold to retailers in Enfield, breached safety regulations

A company director who supplied traders in Brent with dangerous toys which breached safety regulations has been fined a total of £4,000.

Guldip Singh Dang, from Harrow, sold the hazardous items to traders in Wembley and Edmonton through Star One International Limited – where he was the company director.

Wood Green Crown Court heard he was caught when Brent and Harrow Trading Standards Service and their counterparts in Enfield launched a joint project targeting toy importers supplying independent retailers in both boroughs.

Toys bought from shops were sent for tests and a number were found to be unsafe resulting in the traders leading the officers to Dang’s company.

The court heard that when Dang was interviewed he said the toys were imported from China and the company had not carried out any independent testing of the products.

Furthermore, when questioned, he showed very little understanding of the toy safety requirements and labelling provisions of the relevant regulations despite the fact that he had been trading since 2009.

He admitted six offences relating to the supply of toys that failed to meet the essential requirements of The Toys (Safety) Regulations 1995 and one offence of supplying a toy that contained a banned substance and was fined £1,000.

He was also ordered to pay £3,000 costs.

Cllr Lincoln Beswick, Brent Council’s lead member for crime and public Safety, said: “The protection of children from unsafe goods is a high priority for Brent and we will continue to monitor local traders on a regular basis to ensure that they, and the importers who supply them, are complying with the law.

“Importers have a duty to ensure that all products that they import are safe to place onto the market.”
