Town hall bosses have given their seal of approval to plans to alter an existing pilot scheme to relax parking restriction during Wembley Stadium event days.

Under the plans, three new signs, directing people who have had their cars towed to the council’s car pound in Whitby Road, Park Royal, will be erected in Abbey Road junctions with the North Circular Road, Whitby Avenue and Coronation Road.

In addition, the council will be able to contact people by email and/or text message to inform them that their car has been impounded while providing information on how to get it back.

In April, town hall bosses relaxed parking restriction on the stadium’s event days - to start three hours before an event starts and ends- following complaints from residents that the current time scale, from 8am until midnight, start too early.

The pilot was intended to focus on more serious offences which are considered to affect road safety and may create traffic congestion, while relaxing enforcement on those deemed less serious.

Overall, there has been a 45 per cent decrease in impounded vehicles during the first four months of the trial compared to the four months prior to the pilot -according to a report by the director of environment and neighbourhood services.

The number of automobiles removed from residential streets has fallen by 342 from 354 to 12, but 21 more vehicles were removed from yellow lines spots.

The effect of the trial scheme has been a reduction in income generated from vehicle removal operations, which has plummeted by an estimated £303,000 from just under £722,000.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, said: “The council has made changes to our event day enforcement procedure, to focus enforcement on the hours preceding events with the aim of protecting parking for residents and local businesses.”
