Campaigner donates Christmas tree to Barham Community Library
Friends of Barham Library also entertain shoppers in Wembley High Road with carol-singing event
Campaigners fighting the impact of the closure of Barham Library brought Christmas cheer to their pop-up branch and bookshop on Saturday.
Friends of Barham Library (FOBL) brightened up Wembley High Road by displaying their own Christmas tree outside their community library which was donated by Cllr Paul Lorber, leader of Brent’s Liberal Democrat and a member of the campaign group.
The tree, decorated with recycled decorations, was described by Cllr Lorber as a ‘small gesture to provide festive cheer in this season of good will’.
FOBL was established after Brent Council axed six libraries – including Barham – as part of cost cutting measures to save 1million.
Cllr Lorber continued: “The pop up library and bookshop has now been running for four months and represents a tremendous local effort to persuade the council to reverse the library decisions.”
FOBL also took over Wembley Central Square by singing Christmas Carols for shoppers and traders.

The singers were led by Francis Henry from Daniels Estate Agents who is a member of St George’s Church Choir.
Mr Henry said: “Our volunteer library and second hand bookshop has been a resounding success. We get many visitors amazed to find a bookshop in Wembley High Road and pleased to be able to pick up a bargain from are large book collection.”
The campaign group hope that by raising awareness Brent Council will “come to their senses” and let the volunteers run a library in Barham Park for the benefit of local people.
Seasonal greeting cards have also been produced to highlight the cause.
The library is open on Saturdays between 11am to 4pm and on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12pm to 5pm.
