A campaigner is at his wits’ end over LED streetlights that still aren’t shining from a Kilburn bridge – despite promises from Brent Council they would be installed months ago,

Clayton Crabtree has been pleading with council officers since the start of the year to have lights repaired beneath the bridge at Kilburn Tube station, in Kilburn High Road, fearful that someone could be killed.

Following intervention by the Brent & Kilburn Times, the council pledged to install new upgraded LED lights on nearby lighting columns last month, but July came and went and darkness continues to prevail.

The 33-year-old, who lives in Rusper Close and is a member of the NorthwestTWO Residents’ Association, said: “I’m totally exasperated from chasing Brent Council. It’s time they take responsibility and deliver on what they promised.

“There is no excuse for taking over five months to fix a light in the high street and residents shouldn’t have to beg for basic services to be provided by the council.”

Clayton came to the Times with the issue after a 74-year-old pedestrian was hit by a lorry and killed on February 19 just down from the Underground.

His calls for lighting fell on deaf ears as he contacted both Brent Council and Transport for London, neither of which would take responsibility.

Finally Brent officers said they were responsible for street lighting levels on public highways but insisted the lamp columns provided “sufficient lighting”. They added the new lights would “further increase brightness at this location”.

The low level of lighting in the busy main road is said to have invited anti-social behaviour including drug users under the bridge and gangs gathering.

“The lack of lighting is not just a safety issue for pedestrians crossing the road,” added Clayton. “It’s led to graffiti and vandalism of the mural that’s meant to welcome people to the town centre.

“Lighting up the bridge is quite a simple, tiny thing. It’s quite unbelievable the council hasn’t done anything, and on a busy road as well.”

After being contacted by the Times, a Brent spokesperson said: “The lights around the Kilburn High Road area should be installed in the next few weeks.”
