A fresh campaign to reopen Cricklewood Library has been launched.

The library in Olive Road, was shut by Brent Council along with five other reading rooms in the borough in a bid to save £1 million in October 2011.

Plans to demolish the building and replace it with 10 flats and a multi-functional 2,000 square feet community hub, drawn up by Andrew Gillick, who also owns the closed Kensal Rise library, were dramatically withdrawn at the eleventh hour last October.

It followed a campaign by local residents against the proposals due to a lack of community space for a new library.

MP Sarah Teather, Lib Dem MP for Brent Central, and Ibrahim Taguri her party colleague who will be fighting to retain her seat once she steps down at the next General Election, are among the campaign’s supporters.

Both politicians will work with campaigners Friends of Cricklewood Library to make sure any new development is fit for purpose as a community reading room.

Mr Taguri said: “I have used community libraries my whole life and they are as important now as they ever have been.”

“We understand how important libraries are to our communities and to building a fairer society.”
