The #CrimeNotToCare campaign, in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy, aims to educate residents and reduce the amount of household waste illegally dumped by rogue traders.

Brent residents have been urged to show their love for the borough and help to keep their local streets clean and tidy.

The #CrimeNotToCare campaign hopes to educate residents on how to correctly dispose of their rubbish as well as curbing the amount illegally dumped by rogue traders who pocket fee’s to take people’s waste.

Brent Council has warned residents that they are liable to prosecution - carrying a potential £400 fine and criminal record - if their waste is fly-tipped, regardless whether it was given to a third party to dispose of.

Last month, a business in Harlesden was found guilty of failing to provide proof of correct waste disposal at Willesden Magistrates’ Court and ordered to pay £1,945 in fines and costs.

Cllr Eleanor Southwood, lead member for environment, said: “The majority of residents in Brent love where they live and make an effort to keep their streets clean.

“That’s why it’s so upsetting when a small minority continue to think that it’s okay to dump unwanted furniture and other rubbish on our streets, assuming that the council will take it away.

“This campaign sends out a clear message that here in Brent we take a zero tolerance approach to those who dump rubbish in our streets, and anyone caught doing so faces a hefty fine.

”If you’re unsure how to dispose of waste legally, please contact the council and they can give you advice.”

Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton, added: “#CrimeNotToCare is an important campaign for our country and we are delighted that Brent Council is partnering with us on it.

“There are almost a million fly-tipping incidents in England every year and cleaning it all up costs us more than £50million a year. It blights communities and our countryside and is a menace.

“We need the public to understand that their rubbish is their responsibility and they must do the right thing with it.”
