Town hall chiefs have given the thumbs up to controversial plans to host a German beer festival in a park in Kilburn.

Last week Camden Council granted permission for Oktoberfest to hold its annual celebration of Bavarian culture in Kilburn Grange.

The events, which attracts up to 2,500 visitors per day, will take place on September 17-20 and September 24-27.

Oktoberfest, which has run popular summer festivals in London since 2011, serves beer and Bratwurst sausages from long tables where drinkers dance to traditional Bavarian oompah bands with some wearing traditional Lederhosen clothing.

However some residents had objected to the plans fearing it could attract drunken and yobbish behaviour.

The company has also been given the green light to set up a giant marquee containing a bar and performance area from September 13 -29.

Carsten Raun, director of London Oktoberfest, said: “There will be bands playing the traditional oompah music of Bavaria. We will have a special mood in there and also have a DJ playing British music so we can have people dancing along.”
