A massive marathon broadcast session to highlight the contribution of domestic black music is to ring out from Neasden airwaves.

A 48-hour broadcast of exclusively British black music will play from Brent Community Radio studios, in The Grange from, December 11-13.

The show will be presented by Kwaku BBM, founder of Black Music Congress (BMC), who will kick off the session at noon on December 11.

The DJ is running a competition asking the public “Which song should I start the marathon with?”

To introduce newer and unsigned recordings, he’s also asking residents for titles of tracks released within the last 10 years.

John Downie, station manager, said: “We are highlighting the contribution of British black music. We are getting those who have made it to say this is where we are from and those who made it in the past, who were big back in the day, to say what they have done to contribute to it.”

He added: “The marathon broadcast will also connect local artists in the area. It aims to raise awareness of the community station, and also raise much needed funds to upgrade equipment, bring in specialist personnel, provide training and support more live programmes.”

The weekend event will feature a day of activities, seminars, and information at the Grange on the 12th, when residents can come in trying their hand as presenters, DJs, producers and production staff.

Those who would like to join the station can take the opportunity to register. Lack of experience should not be a deterrent, as training will be provided.

The day includes the launch of the Song For Jamaica competition.

The winner will get to perform in Jamaica in 2016 as part of the Federation Of Reggae Music’s youth programming initiatives.

It will end on the Sunday as part of a mammoth 24 hour broadcast.

The event is organised by Black Music Congress (BBM/BMC) and Brent Community Radio (BCR), part of the Your Digital Network.

BCR is owned by Society For The Advancement Of Black Arts (SABA), a registered charity. SABA and BBM/BMC aim to be delivering media and music industry training courses in the future.
