Brent has one of the highest fertility rates in London according to figures released today.

New data from the Office for National Statistics shows women in Brent had an average of 1.97 children each making it the eighth highest out of the 33 boroughs in London.

The figure for 2015 has increased from 1.62 per women in 2001.

Barking & Dagenham has the highest fertility rate in London with an average of 2.41 children per woman – this was also the highest in England.

City of London had the lowest with 0.99 per woman.

The ONS statistics also shows that the fertility rate for women aged 40 and over has risen above that for the under-20s for the first time since 1947.

Elizabeth McLaren from the ONS said: “The trend for women to have babies at older ages continued in 2015. Over the last 40 years, the percentage of live births to women aged 35 and over has increased considerably. “Women aged 40 and over, now have a higher fertility rate than women aged under 20 - this was last recorded in the 1940s.”
