Dry weather cleared the pitch as 250 boys and girls battled it out in the Sisk Construction Brent Super Cup on Saturday held at Ark Elvin Academy, in Cecil Avenue, Wembley.

The football tournament, now in its second year, was organised by Stonebridge councillor Zaffar Van Kalwala and supported by Sisk construction.

Boasting five times the number of players as last year, it drew hundreds of supporters who cheered on the 21 teams competing to be the best in the borough.

And there were winners all round.

Introduced for the first time, the girls’ competition saw Brent Schools thump Queens Park Sharks 5-0 in the final to take the under-11s title.

In the boys’ section, London Tigers claimed the under-11 prize in a nail biting penalty shootout against AFC Wembley.

The under-10s crown went to Wembley FC who proved too strong for their Sudbury rivals LNER, beating them 2-0 in the final.

In the closely watched under-12s division, AFC Wembley put last year’s final defeat behind them knocking out defending champions Youngs FC in the semi-finals. The Pellat Road based club went on to lift the trophy after overcoming Brent Schools 2-1 in the final.

Off pitch, Tottenham Hotspur FC and QPR set up a skillszone and provided fun activities for the young footballers. There were also non-sporting activities for young attendees.

The tournament, which was revived last year to combat knife crime and anti-social behaviour, this year focused on encouraging young people to live healthier and more active lifestyles.

Cllr Van Kalwala said: “This was an amazing event, which brought the whole community together from all parts of Brent to celebrate and provide opportunities for our young people to live happy, healthier lives. The tournament was expanded this year to give more children the opportunity to take part and it all worked out well in the end with lots of parents getting involved as well.”

Darrah Nuna, Sisk’s site manager, said: “Sisk Construction is delighted to support young people in Brent to help them achieve their potential and to make a difference in the borough.”
