The shocking scenes two weeks ago of the burning tower block in London serves as a reminder to the government - we need radical change now.

The Fire Safety Bill has received Royal Assent and is enacted in law. This legislation has been a very serious matter of concern for Brent residents.

I have been contacted by many people who are filled with deep worry, living in buildings identified as a fire risk. Leaseholders also have the added financial burden of building works with freeholders in many cases seeking to pass along costs of repairs.

Life has been put on hold for so many, trapped in unsafe buildings, unable to sell.

This legislation falls short of the government’s own pledge to prevent another Grenfell Tower tragedy, nor does it adequately support residents with fire safety costs.

This legislation does not offer enough to support residents living in buildings under 18m not covered by the Building Safety Fund.

Labour recently brought forward five amendments in parliament to make sure the cost of fire safety problems, including those for refurbishment jobs, cannot be passed onto leaseholders by the freeholder. I also signed the McPartland-Smith amendment.

I am deeply disappointed the government passed the unamended version of this Bill into law. The government’s response has been shameful.

I will continue to do all that I can along with my colleagues in the Labour Party to push for stronger action to resolve the ongoing cladding crisis. We must never face another Grenfell tragedy again.
