The leader of Brent Council was named Labour councillor of the year at an public figure-head awards ceremony at the House of Commons.

Cllr Muhammed Butt was handed the accolade at the Political and Public Life Awards, hosted by Keith Vaz MP for Leicester East in conjunction with Asian Voice magazine, in recognition for his contribution to the political space.

Baroness Betty Boothroyd, former Speaker of the House, presented the sparkling award to the Brent councillor, who was recently shortlisted for an award in recognition of his drive for digital innovation.

In total 28 awards were dished out to high profile politicians, entrepreneurs and celebrities including Xfactor 2013 winner Sam Bailey –who received the breakthrough woman of the year award.

Cllr Mohammed Butt said: “I was honoured to receive the Labour Councillor of the Year award, and I am determined use this opportunity to give Brent even greater national recognition and to showcase the fantastic work undertaken by the council and community to make our borough such a special place to live and work.”
