A councillor has joined forces with a local mum in a bid to create new after school clubs in Dollis Hill.

Cllr Alison Hopkins is working with Jasmine Manning to seek parents’ views on the demand for child care in the area.

The Liberal Democrat councillor for Dollis Hill said: “I’ve been contacted by local parents who say there is a real shortage of after school care for children locally.

“I am now exploring with them if we can set up some kind of scheme.”

Two schools have offered premises to host an after school club, but will only run if there is enough demand.

Cllr Hopkins claims after school care could help hard working single parents in particular who struggle to juggle work and family.

Recalling the days her grandmother picked her up from school, she said some parents have brought people from their country of origin to take care of their child.

“It is a real problem and it stops people from having a decent jobs and end up being pushed into part time or ‘child friendly’ jobs,” she added.

The questionnaire has already been sent to several hundred Dollis Hill residents.

Cllr Hopkins is also looking at whether transport help can be provided using the community minibus funded by local councillors’ ward budget.
