Parent power has forced council chiefs to axe plans to expand a primary school in Kensal Rise.

Concerned parents and residents lobbied against the proposals for Princess Frederica School in College Road, which would have made room for 210 more pupils.

Yesterday, Brent Council’s Executive voted to reject the unpopular plans after a public consultation showed that 93 per cent of respondents were against it.

The original proposals, backed by the school’s governing body, would have involved extensive building work to modernise and enlarge the school over a two -year period.

Construction was due to commence in September 2014 and the school was set to expand by 30 places year-on-year, from reception all the way up to Year 6 by 2020.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, said: “This is an unusual situation to be in. On the one hand we undoubtedly need extra primary school places but we are committed to listening to residents. Many parents have raised serious and substantial concerns about the impact of the loss of play space during the proposed construction.

“In light of this, I believe it is our duty to listen and re-think these proposals. I have therefore directed the council to develop a new school places strategy which will provide a high quality education for all Brent children in the best placed schools.”
