Brent Council may not have held a public screening of England’s World Up semi-final against Croatia – but it will be showing the final.

There were numerous calls for chiefs to put up a large screen for England’s extra-time defeat – their biggest game in 28 years – but it declined on the back of safety advice from the police.

But the tournament’s showpiece between France and Croatia will be given the big-screen treatment in King Edward VII park in Wembley.

Leader Cllr Muhammed Butt said: “Obviously we were all hoping for England to finish the job, but it just wasn’t to be.

“Nevertheless, this is a proudly global borough and we are keen to carry on celebrating this global event.

“We’re putting up a big screen in King Edward VII park and hope that residents can come along and enjoy the final match of what has been an outstanding tournament.”

The screening is free, and tickets are not required. Coverage will start at 3pm.

The council will work with police to make sure it’s a safe event.

There has been a large screen in front of Brent Civic Centre, in the shadow of Wembley Stadium, but it has only been showing Wimbledon.

But the London Designer Outlet, a stone’s throw away from the stadium, has been showing the World Cup, as well as the tennis.
