The Rainbow Flag will be flown at half-mast over Brent Civic Centre today as a tribute to the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting massacre.
Omar Mateen gunned down 49 people in gay nightclub Pulse on Sunday night before he was shot dead by police.
The Rainbow Flag is internationally recognised as a symbol of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.
Cllr Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, said: “The senseless violence in Orlando was an attack on both the LGBT community and all of us who believe that what unites us is stronger than what divides us,” said
“Brent is proud to be one of the most diverse places in the world and we have a long history of supporting and celebrating our LBGT community. The horrific scenes in Florida are an insult to everything we value and hold dear.
“At moments like this we must stand together with the victims, the wider LGBT community and all those who celebrate diversity and accept people for who they are.”
The council is planning a series of events throughout the year which aims to help local communities to tackle difficult issues head on and discuss solutions.
The first ‘It’s time to talk’ event is focused on hate crime and takes place at Brent Civic Centre on July 21.
Yesterday, thousands of people attended a vigil in Soho in memory of the Orlando massacre victims.
