Let us hope that last week’s long overdue and desperately needed ceasefire in the Middle East holds. More than that, let us pray this cycle of violence, and all the factors contributing to it, can finally be brought to an end, to everyone’s lasting benefit.

Closer to home, on Covid-19, there has been a greater sense of cautious optimism in recent weeks. However, it now appears that with these variants of concern on the rise in London and elsewhere around the country, we must all once again air far more on the side of actual caution.

The good news is that the vaccines show promising results against these strains and it is easier than ever to get yourself vaccinated. Yes, we all need to carry on washing our hands, keeping our distance, and making good decisions about how and where we socialise. However, we also need to recognise that vaccination is the best defence against this virus, for yourself, your loved ones, and for society as a whole. See nhs.uk for more information.

Finally, with the release of ward level data, we can now see that, across the mayoral race, the constituency and London-wide Assembly member contests, and the Brondesbury Park by-election, Labour Party candidates Sadiq Khan, Krupesh Hirani, and Gwen Grahl respectively, all secured victory, with Krupesh and Gwen both impressively surpassing the majorities of their predecessors.

As welcome as these results are none of us in office is in any doubt about the need to continue working with our residents, listening to the people who live and work in the great borough of Brent, and striving every day to earn the trust placed in us.
