Brent Council has launched a serious case review after a mother, with whom social services had been in contact, suffocated her two sons and then hanged herself.

Jeyvani Vageswaran smothered seven-month-old Nathiban and five-year-old Anopan at her home in Woodgrange Close, Kenton, on January 9 before taking her own life.

Her accountant husband Sakthivel, who found their bodies, had been cautioned by the police in November last year after admitting the common assault of his wife.

The council had been in contact with Mrs Vageswaran prior to the deaths and the investigation will look at its role in safeguarding the children as outlined in the Working Together (2013) guide.

Tashma Brown, a neighbour, told the Times she regularly overheard the Sri Lankan couple arguing and once alerted police out of concern.

The mother-of-two added that Mrs Vageswaran was a recluse.

Detectives from the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command are not looking for anyone else in connection with the three deaths.

An inquest into all three deaths was opened and adjourned for a later date at Barnet Coroner’s Court.
