Brent Council is planning to set up a series of big question events to involve the community in dealing with Muslim extremism.
Yesterday, cabinet members met at the Brent Civic Centre, to recommend a plan to deal with the government’s Prevent programme, which seeks to stop people being radicalised.
Cllr James Denselow, Brent Council’s lead member for stronger communities, said: “The act contains a section outlying the ability of the government can come in and take over the delivery of Prevent if we are found to be in breach of our duty.”
The council will look at two ways of dealing with the “twin challenges of radicalisation and Islamophobia” he said, adding: “Instead of looking at religion to find the answers we will look at vulnerability and the practices used to groom young and vulnerable people into gangs, sexual abuse and extremisms.
“The second thing is we can’t do it ourselves; it has to be a community led approach.”
“The strategy looks to set up a series of big question events using the models we have learnt. We can hope to form community action groups and Brent multi-faith forums to provide the pathways to engage a cohesion of resilience.”
