The Sufra Food Bank and Kitchen, in Pitfield Way, Neasden, is the focus of a crowdfunding campaign launched on Saturday.
At the launch a new mural to Prince was unveiled outside the Electric Ballroom, in Camden High Street, on the first anniversary of his tragic death.
The musician died at his mansion in Minnesota at the age of 57 on April 21 last year.
The mural has been put up by environmental group 1010uk.org on the gates around the back of the club in Kentish Town Road, where Prince played a secret gig in 2014.
The 1010 group was inspired by revelations that Prince was a secret philanthropist, supporting causes from youth empowerment to racial justice - and clean energy for all.
From now until Prince’s birthday on June 7 - when the mural will be taken down - they will be fundraising in his honour for a project to put solar panels on the roofs of organisations fighting for the causes he believed in.
Among them is The Sufra North London Food Bank along with five other projects around the UK.
The 1010 charity website says: “Did you know Prince used to secretly buy people solar panels?
“‘The world needs to know that it wasn’t just the music’ Van Jones said the day after Prince died: ‘There are people who have solar panels right now on their houses in Oakland, California, that don’t know Prince paid for them.’”
The charity says of Sufra: “Sufra NW like to bring an environmental awareness to the social good they do. Whether that’s rescuing food wastage or growing their own fruit and veg, they understand the importance of preserving our environment.
“So solar panels make perfect sense. Solar will also help the group cut their bills so they can deliver more food parcels to more families each year.”
