A Brent businesswoman who founded the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards has been recognised for her achievements in the industry.
Kanya King MBE, who was born and raised in the borough, won the ‘media pioneer’ category at this year’s Women in Music Awards.
The ceremony marks the contribution of women to the music industry.
She was given her award by Dawn Butler, Labour MP for Brent Central and Shadow Minister for Diverse Communities.
Ms King, who founded the MOBOs in 1996, said: “I’ve dedicated my life to celebrating the excellence of other, so it’s humbling to receive this award. To any young female I would say, ‘Don’t strive to be a person of success, but a person of merit.’”
Ms Butler, added: “Kanya has worked hard for over 21 years to ensure that the music industry celebrates music of black origin in all its forms from pop to hip hop.
“I’m so pleased that someone in the music industry has honoured this pioneering black woman.”
