A sporting club is making sure opponents are bowled over in their drive for success in a milestone year.

Brondesbury Bowling Club in Chatsworth Road, Kilburn, turns 100 this year and club members are marking it with an unbeaten run.

The club, which formed in 1909, are putting all celebrations of their birthday on hold until the season is over.

Bob Middleton, 69, club captain, said: "To be going 100 years it quite an achievement but to be honest we have not been able to celebrate as games are coming thick and fast at the moment.

"It is only the beginning of the season but we are still unbeaten right now so we will have a club get together some time in the future."

Wins over West London and Finchley in their last games have bred a feel-good factor throughout the club which also has a women's team.

Mr Middleton said: "It'd be nice to go through our centenary season unbeaten but it is very doubtful. In truth you win some, you lose some.

"What we have at the club though are great members who are really supportive in these hard times. They back us up if we are in trouble.

"At the moment we are taking every day as it comes and are doing ok but a lot of clubs are struggling.

"The congestion charge has really hit some as to travel into those areas becomes very expensive."

With a 30-strong membership and an age group ranging from early 20s to 88, Brondesbury is readying itself for another 100 years of friendship, competition and community.

Mr Middleton said: "We welcome any members, social or full members and now and then we do hire the club out for local residents - we are well equipped for that sort of thing.

"The pavilion is re-furbished and up to date because you can never stop modernising, the difference between clubs is the members.

"They keep it going, without the members you have not got the club. We have had some great ones through the years and I'm sure we'll have some more."
