QPR fans are certainly getting their money’s worth this season as they have the best attack and joint-worst defence in the league – but is entertainment really enough?

The answer should be no. QPR have probably been the most exciting team in the Championship this season with a league high 38 goals being scored in their 10 games – great for the neutrals, nerve-wracking for the fans. The game against Bolton Wanderers last Saturday ultimately ended in adulation, but there has been a view that Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’ late winner just papered over the cracks in a porous defence.

Offensively, Chris Ramsey’s men have been excellent this season, finding the net in all but two of their matches (in defeats at Charlton and Fulham).

The best attacking performance arguably came against Bolton without the highly sought-after Charlie Austin – a display which showed how crucial the Dutch duo of Leroy Fer and Tjaronn Chery could be to QPR.

The likes of Austin, Fer, Chery, Sandro and Matt Phillips would get into most teams in the Championship (not to mention that they attracted Premier League interest in the summer) and the number of goals being scored highlights QPR’s attacking potential – a reason why many fans are finding it hard to buy into the ‘consolidation’ idea that has been put forward by Ramsey, Les Ferdinand and Co.

Nonetheless, calls for Ramsey to be sacked are harsh. He’s taken over a very difficult job and there has been a significant clearout of players since his arrival.

Ramsey is trying to encourage positive passing based philosophy and that will not work in every single match. Individually, the defenders are better than the goals against record suggests and QPR fans will be hoping that the back four, whoever it may be, settles down as quickly as possible.

While the entertainment factor can produce fantastic matches like the one last Saturday, I am sure many QPR fans would take a few more gritty 1-0 wins if it meant a finishing spot in the promotion places.

The international break gives Ramsey a two-week period in which he can work with his players to cut out the individual errors.

Australian Massimo Luongo is one of three QPR players to be called up to international duty, so there is a chance to gel the defence together for the trip to St Andrew’s on Saturday October 17.
