SO here we are at the top of the league following a 4-0, 3-0 and 2-0 start to the season. I'll happily settle for 1-0 at the next game, before we start the sequence over again.

It's been well documented that this is the first time we've won our opening three games since 1947; a season that ended up with us getting promotion. If you believe in omens, this is a good one.

I didn't expect such a great start and it would be very tempting to get carried away, so I will - for now. Unbeaten, top of the league, nine goals scored, none conceded and the best record in the British Isles!

We've not had a great deal to celebrate in recent years, so I'm going to make the most of it.

The last time we went top of the table was when Georges Santos scored after eight minutes at Preston in 2004, but that stint only lasted three minutes.

You have to go back to 1983 to find us at the top of the league we're in now and we stayed the course to win it!

If I could point one finger at why we've started so well, apart from being in possession of one the country's top managers, I'd say that it's largely due to how quickly the new players have settled in from the outset.

With all due respect to Peter Ramage, Matthew Connolly and Mikele Leigertwood, who all dabbled with the right-back position last season, it's clear to see that Bradley Orr is a genuine right-back, as is Clint Hill on the left and this gives the side a balanced and more solid look about it.

Then we have Shaun Derry (yes, I agree he looks like John McEnroe) holding it all together in midfield and what a great job he's done so far.

Let's save the best until last in Adel Taarabt, who looks a lot leaner and fitter. What a fantastic player this lad is and not just because he runs past players at will. He seems to have added some wonderful passing skills to his game, which is a real bonus.

If somebody had told me he'd captain the side inside the first three games, I'd have laughed, but even at this early stage, he seems to have commanded the respect of everybody.

Of course we're only three games in, but the early signs are excellent. I only hope we're doing something similar in a few months' time.

Since we returned to the Championship in 2004, our December record in the league reads, played 37, won nine, drawn nine and lost 19. Maybe this year we'll have something positive to write at Christmas!
