Youths in a 'forgotten' part of the borough have been snubbed by council chiefs organising sports activities this summer.

Youngsters in Kilburn will have to travel to other parts of Brent or even out of the borough if they want to take advantage of Brent Council organised sports programmes.

The snub came in the Summer Sports 2008 programme, run by Brent Council's Sports Service, which lists the events taking place across the borough from Monday July 28 to Friday August 29.

Activities such as basketball, judo, tennis and boxing are due to be put on but only in places such as Wembley Central, Fryent and Brondesbury Park.

Josie Warshaw, BEST (Brent Eleven Streets) residents association, who are putting on a number of free cycling activities, said: "It would be good if the council could pay for this rather than us.

"Youths are always made out to be the scary people, all you hear about is the horrible things they get up to but it's not the case."

Council chiefs argued that a number of events will be held at the Charteris Sports Centre in Charteris Road, Kilburn, and promoted by the centre itself.

Al Forsyth, Brondesbury Residents And Tenants association (BRAT) said: "It strikes me that if you are a council with 21 wards you should put something in all 21 wards.

"It's very late to be telling people about the Charteris and it sounds like an add on. ."

The snub comes in the wake of a decision by Brent Council to ask residents to stump up £150 to pay for a Youth Bus to come to the area as revealed in the Times last week.

A Brent Council spokesman said: "This year the Summer Sports Programme will be offering cheerleading and badminton sessions at Queens Park Community School and Queens Park will be hosting multi-sports."
