A temporary hostel for homeless families has been given the green light in Brondesbury Park despite objections from some residents.

Brent Council’s planning chiefs agreed to use John Barker Court in Brondesbury Park, to shelter homeless families at a committee meeting last week.

The building was formally used as a shelter for elderly residents but has been empty since February.

The application is to house homeless families for one year only before the building is demolished to make way for shelter for people aged over 50.

Residents campaigned against the move saying it would lead to anti-social behaviour and an increase of crime and noise with 40 out of 44 respondents on the planning application rejecting the plan against two in support.

Cllr Carol Shaw, Conservative councillor for Brondesbury Park, said: “I’m absolutely furious about this. All the local residents placed objections. Elderly people were evicted due to safety work. If that was the truth, why hasn’t it happened?

“The consultation was a sham, with some residents not consulted at all. With three homeless hostels around here already, people are concerned there will be trouble.

“I hope the planning committee do not come to regret the decision they made. “

Cllr Margaret McLennan, lead member for housing and development at Brent Council said: “I am very pleased that the committee approved this application.

“It is important because the number of people in need of emergency accommodation has increased, mostly due to the impact of welfare reform and ever rising rents.

”The building will primarily be used to accommodate families that are currently being housed in expensive bed and breakfast accommodation.

“This decision means that we can improve the living standards for these families as well as save the council £75,000 over a period of five months.

“We are very thankful to Network Housing Group for their contribution in making the building available to use for this purpose.”
