World champ Amir Khan took time out of his busy schedule yesterday (Tuesday) to lend his support to a community boxing club struggling for survival.

Stonebridge Boxing Club, in Winchelsea Road, Stonebridge, has two months to come up with funding to cover its rent and other running costs.

While proving popular its low fees, aimed at making the gym accessible to all, have left it short of cash.

The club's management hope the flood of local, national and international media attention could help attracting sponsors.

Amir, the WBA world welterweight champion, said: "It was fantastic to see all the young people taking part and doing some really positive stuff.

"There's lots of talent out here and maybe even some future boxing champions.

"I hope Stonebridge Boxing Club goes from strength to strength."

The club has been credited with giving young people discipline and a positive focus as well as improving their fitness.

Cllr Zaffar Van Kawala, Stonebridge ward, said: "It was wonderful to have Amir Khan visit Stonebridge Boxing Club. It gave a real boost to everyone.

"This club is great for the community and we're all supporting it to ensure it carryie on doing the good work it does for our local area."
