When Italian Nadia Mensah Yeboah arrived in England aged 13 she spoke barely any English but that hasn’t stopped the Capital City Academy pupil who is off to university to study law.
The 18-year-old bagged A’s in English literature and philosphy & ethics, a B in Italian and C in history and will be taking her clutch of A-levels to Kings College in the autumn.
She said of her time at the school in Doyle Gardens: “I am very happy I came to Capital and stayed for sixth form. My friends and teachers really motivated me to believe in myself and be who I wanted to be. My advice is to take advantage of every possible opportunity given to you.”
Staff and pupils have certainly done their best. Results at the Willesden based school have jumped significantly on last year. A*-C results have jumped from 60pc to 70 pc of pupils.
The percentage of A*-B grades have made a huge leap from 28pc in 2016 to 41pc today. A*-A has also risen from five pc last year to 17pc.
BTEC entries stayed stable at 77pc with its own top achieving pupils.
Kevin Kabasele quickly got to know Frank Kwakye who arrived at Capital City from Ghana in year 10, in the middle of the year.
They both decided to stay on for sixth form and chose the same extended sports diploma course.
They received triple starred distinctions, the highest merit, but will go their separate ways for university.
Kevin is heading to the University of Kent to study sports & exercise studies while Frank will be at Brunel University studying human performance.
Alex Thomas, principal, said: “Well done to our Year 13 on some fantastic results. It is really exciting to see a large increase in the percentage of top grades and the number of A* and Distinction* achieved.
“Thank you to all our staff and Capital 6 team for their hard work in supporting the students receiving results today.
“We are pleased with the proportion moving on to university and the range of destinations reflects the good results and the opportunities Capital 6 has to offer.
“The staff, governors and trust would like to congratulate the students and offer them our best wishes for their futures wish.”
