A leisure centre sauna has been temporarily closed after repulsive images of drain larvae sparked cleanliness concerns.

Vale Farm Sports Centre, on Watford Road, North Wembley, has taken action to temporarily close its sauna and “eliminate” a problem with insect infestation.

It comes after brief footage sent to the Brent & Kilburn Times showed a handful of small grey insects wriggling on the floor of the sauna.

A member of three years said that there have been a few issues – with the infestation being the worst – that put them off visiting the centre.

They claimed that they first reported the situation to staff on October 7 and then were surprised to see the creatures again last Saturday (October 14).

At first the member speculated that these could be worms or maggots on the floor, fearing there’ was a “lack of cleanliness” and “health and safety risks”.

However the Brent & Kilburn Times has been told that this is in fact drain larvae, and after alerting Everyone Active, the sauna will be cleaned.

Chris Williams, area contract manager, said: “We can confirm the sauna at Vale Farm Leisure Centre has been temporarily closed, due to the discovery of drain larvae.

“While we are advised that they pose no health risks, we are working with experts to eliminate the problem as soon as possible.

“It is incredibly important to us that our leisure centres offer a clean and welcoming environment and we would like to apologise that expectations have not been met. We will update our customers as soon as we can.”
