With Monday, August 28, being a bank holiday, Brent and Harrow residents should be aware of changes to their bin collections over the weekend and into next week.

Initially introduced in 1871 to enable bank workers to attend a cricket match, the August Bank Holiday is now a chance for everyone to enjoy the last of the summer before the long slog to Christmas.

Households have been advised to check their bin collection days to ensure their rubbish gets taken away. Listed below are the changes to the bin collection schedules made by Brent Council and Harrow Council.

Brent

For Brent residents, all general rubbish bins will be collected as scheduled if it falls on the bank holiday. However, recycling, food, and garden waste pick-ups will take place one calendar day after the normal collection day.

This means, if residents are scheduled to have their recycling, food, and garden waste bins collected on Monday August 28, it will instead be collected on Tuesday, August 29, and so on.

  • Collections scheduled for Tuesday, August 29, will be collected on Wednesday, August 30
  • Collections scheduled for Wednesday, August 30, will be collected on Thursday, August 31
  • Collections scheduled for Thursday, August 31, will be collected on Friday, September 1
  • Collections will be back to normal on Monday, September 4.

Brent residents can enter their postcode on the council website to find out exactly when the bins for their road will be collected.

Abbey Road Recycling Centre will be open and operating as normal but many of the council services will be shut. The Civic Centre will be closed to the public, as well as the customer services centre and all public libraries.

Harrow

The council has advised Harrow residents to be aware that there will be no bin collections at all on Monday due to the bank holiday. This will result in a knock on effect for collections throughout the week.

  • Residents whose bins are scheduled to be collected on Monday, August 28, should put them out on Tuesday, August 29, instead.
  • Residents whose bins are scheduled to be collected on Tuesday, August 29, should leave their bins out on both Tuesday, August 29, and Wednesday, August 30, until they have been emptied.
  • Residents whose bins are scheduled to be collected on Wednesday, August 30, should leave their bins out on both Wednesday, August 30, and Thursday, August 31, until they have been emptied.
  • Residents whose bins are scheduled to be collected on Thursday, August 31, should leave their bins out on both Thursday, August 31, and Friday, September 1, until they have been emptied.
  • Residents whose bins are scheduled to be collected on Friday, September 1, should leave their bins out on both Friday, September 1, and Saturday, September 2, until they have been emptied.

Collections will be back to normal on Monday, September 4.

Harrow residents can also enter their postcode on the council website to find out exactly when the bins for their road will be collected.

The recycling centre will be open on Monday as normal, with the usual operating hours of 8.30am to 4.30pm. The majority of council services will be closed and resume on Tuesday, August 29.
