Sunday proved fruitful for Powerday Hooks Boxing Club, when competing in the London semi-finals of the 120th year of the National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs Championships.

Boxing took place behind closed doors at the Peacock in Canning Town, but all bouts were live streamed by Essex Boys and Girls Clubs.

Jamie Barrett, 15, is a winner of multiple national championships, but wasn't at his accurate best against Finchley ABC's competitive Joseph Smith in their 60kg contest.

Barrett forced a count on Smith in the first round with a classic one-two, a jab followed by a straight right, but Smith stayed in the contest with Barrett winning on points.

London Brookshaw, 16, continued his good form at 66kg and won by split decision (4-1) against Dale Youth's Harrison Beeker.

Brookshaw's movement and straight punching won the first two rounds, but resting on his laurels and Beeker's determination, probably cost him the third and last round.

Former national champion Michael O'Donnell, 16, continued Powerday Hooks' fortunes in a tough 70kg contest against Repton's Frankie Senior.

O'Donnell's southpaw skills and hand speed saw him winning the beginning of each round, with Senior edging the end of the rounds as the Powerday Hooks boxer won by a split decision.

With byes, Powerday Hooks now have seven boxers through to Sunday's London Finals at the same venue, with the action again taking place behind closed doors, but live streamed by Essex Boys and Girls Clubs.

Head coach Steve Newland said: "Good results, in good bouts. Jamie and Michael needed run outs and will be better for that in their London Finals.

"London must stay 100 per cent on the job for all three rounds."
