A PARLIMENTARY candidate who is under investigation following complaints about his conduct when he was a councillor is also being probed by the police, writes Lorraine King.

The Times can reveal that 47-year-old Atiq Malik could be hauled before the courts after he was grilled by detectives from the Met on suspicion of fraud.

The father-of-four hopes to be crowned the independent MP for the newly created Brent Central seat despite being scrutinised by the Standards Board for England (SBE) and investigated by the cops.

A police spokeswoman confirmed it has received a complaint about Mr Malik obtaining cash by dishonest methods and he was formally interviewed under caution in February.

A file has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service, who will decide whether he will face criminal charges.

Last week the Times exclusively revealed that Mr Malik is being probed for the second time in two years for an alleged breach of the code of conduct by the SBE.

Since Mr Malik became a councillor in the Queensbury ward in 2006 he became embroiled in a number of controversies, including his defection from the Conservative Party to the Democratic Conservative Group, a splinter party he set up with fellow former Tory ward councillor Robert Dunwell.

Both men were subsequently booted out of the national Conservative Party.

In June 2008, Mr Malik was reported to the SBE but cleared six months later.

In February 2009, Mr Malik posted comments on a website saying Sharia Law should be an option in the UK for Muslims wanting to settle disputes.

The law, which is enforced in several Muslim countries, governs both civil and criminal justice as well as regulating individual conduct both personal and moral.

He also seemingly advocated the introduction of the stoning to death of married women who have affairs and unmarried women who had sex should be whipped.

Confirming that Mr Mailk was under investigation, a police spokeswoman said: "A 47-year-old man was interviewed under caution on February 11, 2009.

"The allegation relates to monies dishonestly obtained.

"A file has been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for advice.
