What do you get if you grab a Pyotr Tchaikovsky classic and turn it into a Peter Tong-style remix?
Pupils in Brent are finding out thanks to a musical initiative which is being rolled out in schools across the borough.
The project by Promusic LDN is called Proclassic and hits the right notes by teaching students how to re-compose famous classical compositions into chart style remixes using a special technology program.
The scheme aims to broaden music making opportunities to pupils from all backgrounds, develop musical talent and provide greater access to Western fine arts heritage.
Pupils at Mitchell Brook Primary School in Bridge Road, Harlesden, have just completed the eight-week course.
Five have been selected to move on to the development stage and will receive professional mentoring from graduates from the Royal Academy of Music, music industry professionals.
They will also have the opportunity to create their own composition for a real orchestra.
A spokesman for the school said: “I think that this approach is very relevant to the children that we teach and therefore has meant all the children are engaged, which is not always the case when using traditional teaching methods and approaches.”
