Brent Council will be tackling dirty streets in Wembley Central and Sudbury as part of a week of action starting next Monday.

Paan-spitters who leave distinctive orange stains on the pavement and other litterbugs are included in the initiative which includes a range of community engagement activities.

The council is teaming up with other partners including the police and the voluntary sector to highlight the health dangers caused by chewing paan, a tobacco popular in the Asian community, and the support available to enable users to quit

Other activities include visits by the youth bus, offering activities for young people, the Diabetes UK bus, offering health information, and dental checks.

Residents are being invited to meet councillors and officers to air their concerns with all participants being entered into a draw to win £25 worth of shopping vouchers.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, leader of the council, said: “We listen to all local residents and, through our Week of Action programme, we will focus on tackling the key local issues that have been raised in particular wards.

“Sudbury and Wembley Central residents have asked us to prioritise a major clean up and also tackle tobacco paan chewing, and we will be running a wide range of other activities with the aim of making a real difference to residents.

“We encourage local people to get actively involved in the programme. There will also be extra opportunities to meet with councillors and council staff face to face and tell us what matters most to residents in the areas where they live.”

Residents can meet the team between 12pm and 4pm at the Open Space, in Butler’s Green, Sudbury Town Centre, on July 28 August 2, and at Wembley Central Square, outside Wembley Central station, on July 30 and August 1.
