Police have lifted a cordon around the Wembley Park area as bomb disposal experts conclude work to move an unexploded World War II bomb discovered in a car park.
Police removed the 400 metre cordon erected yesterday afternoon after construction workers discovered the bomb-thought to have been dropped in a 1941 German air raid- as they cleared a car park in the vicinity of Wembley stadium.
Police and Army bomb disposal specialists arrived in reinforced vehicles at the site to take the 50 kg device to a secure location outside of London for detonation.
Roads around central Wembley are expected to re-open this afternoon, but Brent Council has confirmed that Brent Civic Centre will be closed for the rest of the day.
The lifting of the cordon means 300 residents and businesses who have been evacuated over the past 24 hours will be able to return to their properties.
Councillors have praised the swift response of the Army and Police bomb squads, with Brent Council posting to social media: “Thank you to The British Army and Met Police for your hard work over the last 24 hours.”
