Care facilities are in the news a lot lately, as the scandal of abuse and neglect in Cumbria’s Whorlton Hall has shown.

However, we must keep up the pressure to improve our care provision for the most vulnerable members of society. Thanks to this pressure, we have some great news about care provision on our very own doorstep.

Last month, CNWL NHS Trust opened a new facility called Crystal House, the first London based specialist inpatient unit for young people aged 13 to 18 years, with a learning disability, mental health issues, challenging behaviour and autism. It's a badly needed facility, with five inpatient beds and it's housed in a separate unit to the already established and CQC rated "outstanding" site at The Kingswood Centre, in Kingsbury. It has also created 40 jobs.

The unit, which includes a new specialist team made up of psychiatry, psychology, therapy and nursing, will support vulnerable young people through assessment and treatment using a positive behaviour approach. Working in partnership with Ashley College and Brent Council, it will also provide a bespoke educational programme.

The unit has been funded by NHS England so will be providing these services nationally. However, the particular focus of the unit will be on young people from London to ensure they receive care closer to home.

CNWL's CEO, Claire Murdoch said: "This unit is going to be of the highest standards for the care of their loved ones" and from what I've seen, it is!
