UNLIKE the movies, computer games have long understood the appeal of comic book heroes and with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 we are presented with what appears to be the biggest group ever.

From Spider-Man to Deadpool and the Green Goblin to Thor, dozens of marvel's best-loved heroes and villains are centre stage in the latest game.

Beginning with a group of four, you storm the small country of Latveria looking to prevent a suspected terrorist from stocking weapons but once there things do not quite go to plan.

With a premise right from the pages of a comic book Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 has one of the best story arcs ever seen in a computer game.

Interest is kept through the cut scenes as the player has a desire to know what is happening next or who will go where.

The graphics while playing are spot on and full of colour and great movement but sadly the gameplay, which is absolutely imperative in computers, is just a little tired.

Button bashing and stick twiddling can be enjoyable but it does have the feeling of being slightly outdated.

Yes, you can learn new moves and execute them for each of the characters but there is the feeling that there was the possibility to offer so much more.

The restrictive nature of the levels (you can pretty much go in one direction with no exploring of the world) works against the feeling of a universe with all the characters available.

Having said that it is good fun and there is more than enough to keep in the interest levels high and perhaps it is testament to what a good job programmers have done that you are left hoping they had done a little bit more.
